Making Waves

I often miss my pre-teen days when Summer meant spending full days outside at our family beach house in Long Beach Island. A bathing suit was the daily uniform and sunscreen was the only part of my beauty regiment since I was much more concerned with perfecting the perfect cannon ball over the perfect beach 'do and bikini bod. I took for granted the unending sunshine, golden glow that lasted deep into October and the awesome waves that came from salt-water soaked hair and beach breezes. Ahhhh the good old days!
I have tried with little success to re-create beach hair in my adult summer days which instead of sun and salt-water consists of outrageously overpriced hair products falsely promising to give that perfect beach look (I'm talking to you Bumble & Bumble). And my hair is just not having it. So I am living vicariously through these ladies and their fabulous beach locks!

And turning to the "experts" for a little hair-spiration when I'm feeling really ambitious.
Lauren Conrad has started a new beauty blog and it is pretty fantastic. Even though I was always team Kristin back in the Laguna Beach days, I must say her new gig is quickly making its way to the top of my favorites. Thebeautydepartment.com is a witty, entertaining, girly guide to all things beauty with some great tutorials and gorgeous photos. Check it out!
Her beach wave tutorial is certainly no replacement for the real thing, but definitely worth a shot!

  1. SO funny that you mention Bumble and Bumble... once when I lived in SF... I wanted "beach hair" and the salon told me I had to get the B&B stuff... never worked! I love beach hair too!!!!

  2. What what whaaattt? This is bad. How am I going to get any work done now? (Very excited to check out the blog though). P.S - I find that the cheapest easiest way to get waves is to wet your hair and use a little conditioner on the ends and scrunch your hair up with your hands and then just separate the waves with your hands when they dry... works like a charm for me!

  5. Girl let me tell you, I have the EXACT same woes. The only time I've had good waves was by following cupcake & cashmeres tutorial with second or third day hair. And I have found that clean, wet hair gets me no where. I just got another bottle of FF's marine waves for this summer cause I plowed through mine from last year. I am going to try getting my ends wet and spritzing it on to see how that reats me since i haven't washed my hair today.

Oh and the Beauty department has changed my life! I loved the contour tutorial - I can now have noticeable cheekbones with bronzer!

  9. I love your blog! Have been going through your summer archives for a post just like this. You should definitely credit the artist who made that "Salt Air Hair" graphic... she is an illustrator named Katie Daisy, google her and you'll find a ton of art you'll like :)
